Valorant utility timing: when to smoke and flash
Good utility thrown at the wrong moment does nothing. A smoke that fades before your team crosses, or a flash nobody swings on, is a wasted ability. Four habits fix most of it.
1. Smoke when your team is ready to cross
A smoke should block the enemy's view before your teammates walk through that sightline. Throw it when the team is in position and commits to the push. Too early and it fades before the hit. Too late and your entry is already dead.
2. Flash as the swing starts
A flash is strongest when someone fights right after it. Time it so it pops as your teammate starts to swing, so the defenders are blind exactly when the fight begins. If nobody is ready to move within a second or two, hold the flash.
3. Don't dump everything early
Using all your abilities in the first seconds of a round leaves nothing for the fight that decides it. Early on, use utility to get information. Keep at least one ability for the site take, the post-plant or the retake.
4. Call it out
Most timing problems are communication problems. Short calls work best: "smoking in 2", "flashing now, swing", "holding my flash for the retake". Then your team can actually use what you throw.
How to practice it
- Next game, before you use an ability, say out loud what it is for and who will use it.
- Count how many abilities you still have when the last fight of a round starts. Aim for at least one.
- After a lost round, check if your flash or smoke landed before or after the fight began.
Let Vetro check yours
Not sure if this is your problem? Upload a 30-second clip of a round where you used your abilities. If the timing was off, Vetro will tag it as Utility Timing and tell you what to change.
